The styloid process can be visualized on standard panoramic films and on modified views such as those taken for visualization of the temporomandibular joints on the Gendex Panelipse machine. On these latter films, the position of the styloid process appears to change relative to surrounding anatomic landmarks when comparing open jaw versus closed jaw projections. The appearace of movement is created by judging the styloid process position against an apparent stationary mandible. Magnification, linear distortion and angular distortion of the process and surrounding landmarks also contribute to the illusion. |
