Intramolecular Energy Transfer in Europium Chelates Due to Excitation of the Triplet State

Abstrakt: The purpose of this paper is to clarify whether intramolecular energy transfer in europium chelates occurs viathe triplet state of the ligand. It is attempted to excite the triplet state of europium dibenzoylmethide (EuD) by utilizing intermolecular triplet-triplet energy transfer from lanthanum dibenzoylmethide (LaD). In mixed solutions of EuD and LaD, the intensity and decay time of the ligand phosphorescence of LaD decreases with increasing molar fraction of EuD at liquid nitrogen temperature. Nearly in proportion to this, the intensity of the europium emission of EuD is enhanced, veryfying the occurrence of energy transfer from LaD to EuD. This fact is taken as clear evidence that intramolecular energy transfer takes place viathe triplet state.
