Abstrakt: The benzidine rearrangement of hydrazobenzene is retarded by the addition of a-, ß-, and ?-cyclodextrins. The effects on the rate of the cyclodextrins are decreased by the addition of cyclohexanol. The deceleration of the reaction by the cyclodextrins was attributed to the equilibrium complexation of the substrate in the cavities of the cyclodextrins, which may either restrict the large conformational change of the substrate necessary for reaching a sandwich-type transition state or lower the concentration of the diprotonated hydrazobenzene by means of the space alkalinity of cyclodextrins.
