•Human hair has been recovered from the wreck of HMS Erebus (Franklin Expedition 1845).•The marine and wreck environment significantly degraded and contaminated the hair.•Laser double ablation removed contamination to investigate elemental content of hair.•Hair of comparator groups informed effects of time and environment on element content.•Degradation of the hair precluded recovery of viable DNA to identify the remains. |
