•Inhibition of the activation of eukaryotic translation factor 5A by the spermidine analogue GC7 is shown to protect against salt stress.•Its mechanism exhibits some antioxidant features such as reducing ROS levels.•Both steps of hypusination are affected by GC7 treatment independently from salt stress.•GC7 is applicable as an inhibitor of hypusination in plants. |
