While sifting through old archival holdings of the State Geological Survey of Bavaria, a surprising chance find was made in spring 2019: It is a printed call for the founding of a German Geological Society, the existence of which had not been known until then. The document is handwritten and addressed to “Regierungs-Assessor Graff in Speyer” and, in addition to explanations of the society and the names of the persons calling for its foundation, also contains a list of the addressees to whom it was sent! This unique find allows us to shed light on the initial phase of the DGG. |
