Phase transformations and mechanical properties of NiTiMo alloys were studied. It was found that (1) solubility limit of Mo in NiTi at 1000 °C is less than ~ 2 at.%. Additional Mo results in a Mo-rich phase with a bcccrystal structure. (2) Mo significantly suppresses martensite transformation, but promotes the formation of R-phase; (3) Phase transformation temperatures increase with increasing valence electron concentration (Cv); (4) Mo appears to have very limited solid solution strengthening effect in NiTi alloys. Although Mo increases the austenite stability, it decreases the materials’ superelasticity by encouraging plastic deformation during stress-induced martensite transformation while also decreasing ductility. This study found no obvious benefit of Mo addition in the NiTi system to mechanical and superelastic properties of ternary alloys. |
