•The availability of traffic flow variables is significant in modelling the traffic volume of long and short trucks.•Artificial neural network optimized by particle swarm optimization model(ANN-PSO) emerged as a reliable predictor model of traffic flow of long and short trucks.•The time of the day plays a significant role in determining whether there will be low or high traffic flow of long and short trucks on the freeways. |
