Abstrakt: This article is based on work for a dissertation on the typography of indexs. The dissertation concluded that the typescript presented by the indexer is a most important part of the eventual printed design. Practical is given to the indexer faced with typing, or using a micro-computer to produce, an index. The article deals briefly with tifie historical development of some of the conventions which lead to recommendations for index design, and points to encouraging future trends. Indexers who understand the reasons for lavout and design, and design considerations should find no diffculty in udating to the use of mordern technology. Index designers, whilst partly influenced by the production methods, must consider chiefly the convenience of the reader.
