The concentration of plasma free fatty acids was increased in twelve patients with kwashiorkor on admission to the hospital; it decreased temporarily during treatment. This increase is a feature of advanced kwashiorkor and is probably due to a profound reduction in food intake and absorption. Adipose tissue may be the chief source of the lipid accumulating in the liver during the late stage of kwashiorkor, being transported to that organ in the form of free fatty acids. Supporting this hypothesis is the fact that analysis of the fatty acids in liver triglyceride showed the pattern to be similar to that of depot lipid. |
