Abstrakt: Histochemical estimation of selected brushborder, mitochondrial, lysosomal and microsomal enzymes, and observations on the ultrastructure were made on the jejunal mucosa of young rats fed a low protein diet for 10 weeks. The ultrastructure of the microvilli was not altered nor were there changes in the brushborder enzymes examined. Acid phosphatase and succinic dehydrogenase were significantly reduced, although the mitochondria appeared normal in fine structure. Glucose-6 phosphatase activity was unchanged, and this correlated with the maintenance of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. The significance of these observations is discussed in relation to malabsorption which has been observed in clinical protein-calorie malnutrition.
