The paper looks at Hong Kong’s public relations (PR) practice as it is influenced by social, economic, political and cultural changes, with a rollercoaster ride of economic and health crises and other changes, demonstrating the resilience of Hong Kong and its PR industry. The major change factors impacting PR are financial and public health crises, integration with China, changes in the Hong Kong media, and rise of advocacy and citizen activism. The major opportunities for PR arising from the changes and crises since 1997 are growing professional PR organisations, a broadening of functions including an increased emphasis on crisis and reputation management, increased emphasis on the relationships to conduct business, and being in tune with Greater China. |
