An idea for a combined system of an SOFC and PEFCs is proposed. Large scale SOFCs are thermally self-sustainable and excess heat is available for the other use. The excess heat is used for a production of hydrogen. Several variations of the hydrogen production systems are proposed. The combination of the SOFC system with recycling the off-fuel and the hydrogen production system by purifying the off-fuel use effectively the excess heat and can produce much hydrogen. The generated hydrogen can be used as a fuel for PEFCs. PEFCs can be operated directly with the produced hydrogen and the present combined system improves the overall electrical conversion efficiency compared with the standalone PEFC or SOFC systems. For the SOFC and PEFCs combined system, the overall conversion efficiency is higher by around 10% than that of the standalone SOFC system. |
