•The purpose of the research is to learn how to change car users’ behavior.•Using logistic regression and PCA, factors and attitudes affecting the travel mode choice were identified.•Case study of four medium-sized Czech towns was performed and travel survey conducted.•Respondents who preferred to work or relax during their commutes were more likely to abandon cars.•Removing constraints limiting the perceived suitability of alternative modes can tremendously effect travel behaviour. |
