Purpose: This paper compares three Stability Lobe Diagrams (SLD) achieved by different sets of Frequency response Functions (FRF) including transfer and driving point measurements, considering aluminum milling using a carbide end mill with two flutes. Methods: The results were obtained using the following steps: Impact test on a carbide end mill tool, coated with titanium nitrite and aluminum (TiAlN), coupled in a vertical machining center ROMI D600 via ISO 40 cone spindle head, modal parameter extraction by Rational Fraction Polynomial (RFP) curve fitting, SLD calculation, and comparison. Results: In the obtained SLDs is possible to to distinguish the stability regions bellow the curve, as well as instability regions above the valleys and outside the peaks. The difference between the diagrams grows as the rotation increase. Increasing the number of FRFs used for estimation of modal parameters creates a variation in the SLDs. The variation is basically in the spindle domain, without significantly affecting the critical cutting depth of 1.3 mm. Conclusions: It was possible to compare the SLD using different FRF sets, the critical cutting dept presents negligible variation among the SLD performed by different FRF sets. The greater the FRF sets, the deeper the stability region. |
