•Engine out emissions of a state of the art diesel engine were investigated under cold start conditions.•Steady state operating points were derived from driving cycles for in-depth analysis.•At low engine loads, poor combustion stability leads to increased emissions.•Low EGR-capability was found to be main source for total NOx-emissions.•Innovative measures are needed to meet future emission legislation for short test cycles. |
