Abstrakt: This paper discusses the nature of the flow of saturated and nearly saturated water into regions where the pressure is less than the saturation pressure. It presents a method of computing the mass rate of flow through orifices and nozzles which is based on the rate of evaporation from a metastable liquid core into a surrounding ring of vapor. The flow rates for orifices are predicted accurately, and rates for nozzles are predicted to within 10 per cent. The analysis is based upon experimental investigations and is restricted to adiabatic flow conditions.
