The paper reports (1) a “monoplane-based” method for the conceptual design of a light boxplane and (2) the results of comparison of a light boxplane to an equivalent monoplane. The “monoplane-based” method was applied to develop the conceptual design of a light boxwing aircraft. To validate the analytical predictive procedures embedded in the method, a scale model of this light boxplane was designed, built, and tested. Also, numerical analysis was performed. Finally, the comparison of the boxplane with an equivalent monoplane was conducted. The wind-tunnel tests demonstrated a satisfactory convergence of analytical predictions with the experiment (within the limits of a separation-free flow). Through the comparative boxplane-monoplane study it was discovered that with a given type of high lift devices, the light boxplane under investigation exceeded the equivalent monoplane in cruise and was inferior in the field characteristics. The use of the boxwing reduced the aircraft structural weight and fuel consumption. |
