Many inherited diseases or syndromes affect the head and neck and therefore have implications important to the dentist. Not only does the dentist have the responsibility to recognize and treat hereditary conditions, but he can also perform a great service to the patient by giving genetic counseling. If the practitioner feels he is not capable of such counseling, he should refer the patients to someone knowledgeable in this field. When such disorders affect the oral cavity and oral structures, the dentist is the most logical person to detect and diagnose these abnormalities. |
