Abstrakt: The foundation of successful dental practice is, as in every branch of the healing arts, diagnostic acumen. Therapeutic technical facility means little unless it is applied early enough to be effective and in the correct situation to be useful. The clinician must be constantly on the alert for beginning pathologic changes of the periodontal tissues in patients under his care. In the diagnostic work-up of a new patient an orderly progression of history and examination procedure will reveal the maximum amount of information. Organization and interpretation of these data leads to diagnosis. From the diagnosis and the identification of the etiologic factors a treatment plan may be drawn up. This plan calls for establishing a sequence of steps in therapy which has as its goal the elimination of disease, the correction of the mutilation caused by the disease, and the establishment of an oral environment which will not be conducive to the development of further disease. This treatment plan should be both inclusive and flexible. Better periodontal health will be the reward for keen diagnosis and well-thought-out treatment planning.
