Results of recent geological mapping as well as of sedimentologic and of petrographic research work at the northern rim of the Wittlich basin gave an idea of division and interpretation of the Upper "Rotliegend" (Permian) series of this area. Coarse conglomerates of bad sorting during stage I are followed by series of sandstones still containing pebbles in stage II which are superposed again by a much more differentiated sand-/siltsione series of stage III. Nevertheless, increasing relief energy caused by tectonic activity of the northern master fault of the basin implied further input of coarse clastics during stages II and III. Genetic interpretation of the sediments of stages I to III shows a consequent evolution from debris flow dominated alluvial fan sedimentation (I) to conditions in braided fluvial systems (II) followed by a flood plain containing meandering channel systems (III). During stages II and III debris flows still came down from the elevated Eifelblock in the north to the basin floor. There, interfingering took place with the sediments of the fluvial systems. |
