Abstrakt: |
A new quasicrystal with no forbidden symmetry axes has been identified in a rapidly solidified Mg– 61 at.% Al alloy. Its structure is characterized by a cubic point group and aperiodic electron diffraction patterns showing inflation symmetry. Therefore this new structural state of matter stands as a cubic quasicrystal. The ratios between inflated motifsare frequentlyp close to irrationalvalues related to 3(i.e. 1+3,3and (1+3)/2).$\sqrt{3}\text{ (i}\text{.e}\text{. }1+\sqrt{3},\sqrt{3}\text{ and }(1+\sqrt{3})/2).$This quasicrystal is metastable and transforms on annealing into the equilibrium fcc β phase (a = 2.83 nm). |
