Macrocybe gigantea(Massee) Pegler & Lodge is an edible summer mushroom, which was reported for the first time from West Bengal in India where it is locally named as “Boro dhoodh chattu” because it smells like dehydrated milk. During the course of present study, some commonly available agricultural wastes were assessed for the cultivation and yield evaluation of Macrocybe gigantea. It was observed that the time period required for complete spawn run on these substrates varied from 15 to 20 days and minimum period was recorded on the maize cobs. Among the tested agro-wastes, maize stalk supported maximum number of pinheads and sporophores, and gave maximum yield (351 g/500 g of dry substrate) with farm yard manure (FYM) as the casing material. Minimum yield of Macrocybe gigantea(303.0 g/500 g of dry substrate) was achieved on maize cobs encased with vermicompost. This investigation showed that Macrocybe giganteacan be successfully cultivated under the climatic conditions of Jammu division (UT of Jammu and Kashmir). |
