Numerous studies in the business context have identified variables that can promote sustainable development. By contrast, studies of universities have mostly clarified challenges of higher education, with little focus on elucidating current barriers to sustainable development in the field. Therefore, this paper aims to identify barriers to developing sustainability in the context of higher education in Vietnam. A qualitative approach is used to analyse data collected from 32 in-depth interviews. The findings show that the current barriers to developing sustainability at universities in Vietnam include the quality of training; outdated curricula; the quality of current faculties and new recruitment; and the lack of community and industry connections. In addition, the analytic hierarchy process approach is used to rate the priority of solutions for overcoming these barriers. The results provide implications for dealing with the current issues of universities in Vietnam. In particular, feasible solutions need to be implemented simultaneously with greater support from university leaders and policymakers. To achieve the expected benefits, efforts to overcome the identified obstacles should be actively carried out. |
