The packed bed of rocks using air as a heat transfer fluid represents the suitable thermal energy storage system for solar air heaters. The aim of this study is to describe the thermal behaviour and to assess the thermal performance of the air/rock bed thermal energy storage system during the discharge process. A transient two-phase numerical model is developed and successfully validated with experimental data. A detailed study was carried out to investigate the effect of mass flow rate and the number of consecutive thermal cycles charge/discharge on the thermal behaviour of the rock bed, the outlet temperature of air and recovered energy during the discharge process. The obtained results help to understand the thermal behaviour and to evaluate the performances of the storage system during the discharge process which has not been studied carefully as the charging phase despite its great importance. |
