Abstrakt: According to modern seismic codes there are certain cases that the vertical component of the ground motion has to be taken into account. However, no specific instructions concerning the structural modelling—and especially the modelling of vertical masses—are provided. The objective of the present paper is the evaluation of six alternative structural models of planar frames under vertical seismic excitation. For this purpose, a series of reinforced concrete single- and multi-storey frames are analyzed by means of linear and non-linear time-history analysis and the values of representative response quantities are calculated. The influence of several parameters such as the length and the stiffness of beams and cantilevers, the number of storeys, the existence of beams supporting columns, the type of the seismic excitations and the analysis method is investigated. The whole evaluation study leads to the derivation of useful conclusions.
