Injections are carried out most often to reduce leakage through the materials on which large dams are built. The injection processes are both complex and expensive operations. Multiple parameters influence the efficiency and performance of the injection curtains. Among these parameters, we distinguish the depth, position, number, inclination and spacing of curtains. The use of numerical modeling is essential to optimize these parameters by means of a parameterized analysis. By considering the case of the El izdihar central core dam in Algeria, and by focusing on the calculation codes the SEEP/W from the Geo-slope for numerical modeling, this paper targets as objective a comparative analysis of the influence parameters on the efficiency and performance of the injection curtains. This comparative analysis is based on the evolution of pore pressures, flow rates and hydraulic gradients depending on variations in injection processes. The results of the parameterized analysis show that the maximum efficiency of the injection curtain is obtained for a depth equal to the height of central core. The considerable reduction in flow rates is achieved for the inclination angles of curtain of 90–110°. The lowest pore pressures are recorded when the inclination of curtain is directed downstream from the central core. For El izdihar dam, in the case of a couple of curtains, the position of the two curtains located, respectively, at the level of the axis and downstream of the central core are the most favorable with regard to the infiltration parameters. |
