Presents data on veterans trained with the Optacon reading device at the Eastern Blind Rehabilitation Center, West Haven, Connecticut. Describes the teaching methodology and the trainees, compares the data with those from other published studies, and gives results of a follow-up questionnaire. This questionnaire provides information about Optacon use and personal feelings of the veterans involved in this pilot study. Data indicate that the veteran population is substantially older than other groups reported in the literature. Acquisition of skill is more difficult for the veteran and eventual reading rates are slower, but the majority of the veterans reported that the device still serves a vital function in allowing them access to print. |
