A television area-photometer based on a computer controlled SEC Vidicon is described. The performance of this photometer is discussed in terms of the results obtained during tests on laboratory point sources and on a stellar UBV sequence. Calculated errors based on the known system parameters are compared with the observational data. The detector is applied to a study of the main-sequence turnoff stars in Omega Cen. With Newell's (1979) modal analysis for stars in crowded fields a calibration for subsequent photographic photometry in the cluster is established. The TV color-luminosity array confirms the anomalously faint turnoff magnitude found by Cannon and Stewart (1978) but shows a main-sequence width which is consistent with the heterogeneous composition of Omega Cen. |
