Abstrakt: This article provides a brief overview for the primary care physician of issues involved in selecting screening guidelines for practice. In selecting such screening protocols, the physician needs to be aware of features of the disease being screened. Although there is not yet a universally accepted set of screening recommendations, there is reasonable agreement on many screening tests recommended by national preventive services task forces in the United States and Canada.217A primary care physician needs to develop a set of guidelines for practice, be aware of new literature on screening tests, and periodically review and update the guidelines.
