The initial acceleration, transverse deceleration, toroidal expansion, and dynamic transition to equilibrium of laser-produced plasmoids in stellarator fields is considered. As is shown, the transverse deceleration may be subject to a Kruskal-Schwarzschild instability. The losses associated with radial drift during the toroidal expansion remain tolerable as long as the magnetic field does not fully penetrate the plasma. Further losses can be expected during the dynamic transition to equilibrium distributions, particularly at low plasma temperatures. The losses may be effectively reduced by suitable selection of the initial plasma (laser) parameters. |
