Structures of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanedithiol molecules were studied using an ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope (UHV-STM) and by Fourier transform infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (FT-IR-RAS). Clearly resolved STM images of alkanedithiol SAMs revealed striped structures as bright lines and the distance between the adjacent bright lines was about 1.5 nm, which is in good agreement with the length of the alkanedithiol molecule. Furthermore, the intensities of the CH2stretching bands in FT-IR-RAS measurement of alkanedithiol SAMs were stronger than those of alkanethiol SAMs. We suggest that the molecules in alkanedithiol SAMs are arranged with their axes parallel to the gold substrate. |
