In the photon correlation function of light scattered from particles suspended in a flow, not only the self-beat term but also the number fluctuation term carries information about the velocity. Based on this fact, a number fluctuation laser velocimeter with two observation apertures has been proposed. The principle of the method is explained. Applications to pipe flows have been carried out to demonstrate the capability of the method, and that it is particularly suited for quantitative characterization of turbulence as well as velocimetry. |
