•The red-tide (bloom) formation by the Protoperidinium steiniiobserved for the first time in the backwaters adjoining the western Bay of Bengal, Kalpakkam coast.•Diatoms and dinoflagellates abundance declined due to an impact of the bloom.•Concentrations of hydro-biological variables (Nitrogen, Phosphate, Silicate and Chlorophyll-a) were significantly high.•Non-toxic HAB formation by heterotrophic dinoflagellate. |
