Abstrakt: The mycoplasmal pneumonias seen in patients in a community hospital may simulate bacterial pneumonias in their clinical and roentgenographic presentations and course. Physical findings of consolidation may occur and may be demonstrated on the roentgenogram. Multilobar and bilateral involvement may be seen. Upper lobe involvement is less often observed but can occur. Pleural effusions are common, and diffuse interstitial reticular patterns may also occur. Hypoxemia is common. Mycoplasmal pneumonia can occur not only in healthy young adults but also in patients with chronic lung disease and in the immunocompromised host. One should not dismiss the possibility of a mycoplasmal pneumonia in these clinical and roentgenographic settings. Routine sputa studies and cold hemagglutination titers may be helpful in orienting initial diagnostic and therapeutic approaches while awaiting definitive studies.
