With the advent of placement of increasing numbers of implants over the next decade, the need for identification, repair, and maintenance of the failing implant will become increasingly important to the practitioner. The use of viable techniques and materials to salvage the failing implant will continue to improve the short- and long-term prognoses. Grafting materials and guided regeneration of bone and soft tissue are integral aspects of future implant success. Future work is necessary to understand better the biologic and mechanical aspects of implant failure and how to treat potential failures predictably. This work should encompass all aspects of dentistry. |
