The binding of staphylococcal 125I-α-toxin (B) to rabbit erythrocytes was demonstrated. The binding was found to be complex, consisting of an initial binding followed by a partial release. The capacity of erythrocytes of different species to bind α-toxin is correlated with the known hemolytic specificity of the toxin. The existence of a specific receptor substance for α-toxin in membranes is proposed. |
