Abstrakt: Many herbal/botanical medicines from plant sources are being used for therapeutic purpose. Alternanthera sessilissp. plant leaves are known for their phytochemical constituents, which have potent antibacterial activity. In the present study, the properties of the A. sessilissp. extract and the biocomposite membrane of A. sessilissp. with sodium alginate were studied for their biomedical applications. Results showed that the A. sessilisethanoic extract possessed high levels of antioxidant and antimicrobial activity and no cytotoxic effect under in vitroconditions. Similarly, the biocomposite membrane of alginate with the A. sessilissp. ethanolic extract showed high antibacterial activity with hemocompatibility and swelling characteristics. Although the antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic effects of A. sessilishave been previously reported, this is the first report on the preparation of a biocomposite membrane with alginate using A. sessilisfor biomedical applications.
