Since the introduction of specific drugs in the treatment of tuberculous pulmonary infiltrations of childhood, there is a need to establish criteria for the use of endoscopic therapy and for surgical resection. No general agreement exists in respect to the indications and optimum time for the employment of these therapeutic adjuvants. This is due, in part, to the comparatively small number of children who require surgical procedures and to the continuously and rapidly changing concepts of this type of treatment. Opinions based on present information concerning the timing of surgery may prove of only limited value. BRONCHOSCOPY Routine bronchoscopy does not appear to be indicated in all cases of pulmonary tuberculosis. The procedure should probably be limited to patients with suggestive clinical and radiographic evidence of endobronchial involvement.
