Pulmonary Edema Occurring During the Course of Renal Azotemia: Its Differential Radiologic Diagnosis

Abstrakt: Although azotemia as a manifestation of chronic nephritis and other disease is not uncommon in children, the pulmonary complication seen during the course of azotemia, which we are here describing, seems to be rare. It is the purpose of the present paper to alert the pediatrician to this type of pulmonary edema with the thought that awareness of this picture may not only lead to more frequent diagnosis but may also direct attention to the importance of cardiac compensation in the prevention of pulmonary edema in these patients. In comparison with its frequency in adults, this syndrome is, nevertheless, infrequent, probably because the various components essential to the precipitation of this type of pulmonary edema are not frequently present in children.Pulmonary edema with azotemia has been repeatedly described in adults3-5,15-17 but, to the best of our knowledge, has not appeared in the pediatric literature.
