Metabolic studies have been conducted on five children who presented the symptoms usually described as typical of lipoid nephrosis. The age of the patient, the sex and the number of days under observation in each case are listed in table 1.The nephrotic syndrome was complicated by the presence of hematuria in one child (case 4) and by hypertension in another (case 5). The last-mentioned patient when first seen was markedly undernourished and weak and had been confined to bed for six months; the other four appeared to be in good physical condition, except for the symptoms associated with the condition under discussion. GENERAL PROCEDURE The five children were admitted to the metabolic unit of the Children's Hospital, which has been previously described.1 There they were constantly attended by specially trained nurses.
