Lichen urticatus constitutes a large proportion of the cutaneous diseases encountered in children. At the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia approximately one fourth of the patients admitted to the dermatologic clinic during the spring and summer months are suffering from this disease. We have been consistently impressed with the ineffectiveness of most of the recommended methods of treatment, with the notable exception of parathyroid extract, first suggested by Cornbleet,1 which has thus far received little attention in the literature. We are therefore presenting our results in a series of patients treated in this manner, with a series of control patients treated by other means. Certain theoretical considerations as to the etiology of the disease have occurred to us from our experience and from a survey of the literature.Parathyroid extract has attained a minor place in dermatologic therapy in recent years.
