This study was undertaken for the purpose of observing the reaction for indican in the urine of the new-born under physiologic conditionsMomidlowski1 tested for indican in the urine of three healthy infants between the ages of 10 and 12 days. He obtained intense reactions which on the second and third day following were negative or showed only traces.Von Reuss2 found indican in the urine in breast fed children during the first nine days of life rather frequently, often without the observation of any clinical symptoms. He states that it occurs in the well nourished, in the undernourished, in the constipated, and in diarrheic infants alike. Indican was not obtained on the first day and rarely on the second.
