It is a pleasure to find a relatively inexpensive, compact volume compiled from presentations at a symposium sponsored by the Perinatal Biology and Infant Mortality Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Well planned and executed, it is a thought-provoking commentary on areas of interest in perinatal research. The symposium was presented in Stanford, Calif, on Dec 6 through 9 in 1970. It is unfortunate that such a gap in time must exist between presentation and publication. Norman Kretchmer, MD, PhD, is Faber Professor of Pediatrics and chief of the section of Developmental Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Stanford University School of Medicine. Eileen Hasselmeyer, PhD, RN, is director of the Perinatal Biology and Infant Mortality Program, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
