To the Editor: The article (Amer J Dis Child 103:658, 1962) by R. T. Ravenholt entitled "Poliomyelitic Paralysis and Tonsillectomy Reconsidered" gives a rather distorted picture of the relationship of tonsillectomy to paralytic poliomyelitis and to some extent misstates the viewpoint of the undersigned investigators* of previous work on the subject. For example, Ravenholt goes far beyond the concept expressed by Fischer and his colleagues in their paper, to which he refers, in using the term "lifelong increased susceptibility" because the paper cited dealt only with a purposely circumscribed age group in childhood, 3-12 years, in order to set up a cohort in which specific rates of incidence of poliomyelitis in the recently tonsillectomized could be measured with some degree of accuracy. Since the observations both on those tonsillectomized within 30 days and over 30 days were made on children, the authors of this paper necessarily limited their conclusions to |
