Abstrakt: The need continues in developing countries for practical, field-oriented agronomists who have the broad range of skills required to conduct effective crop management research programs. The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) conducts training programs aimed at meeting this need, and has provided practical training to more than 600 researchers from developing countries over the past 20 yr. The courses are characterized by their strong emphasis on field activities (40–50% of the course hours), most of which are conducted in farmers' fields, and on the linkage between the theory and application of crop management principles. Course participants plant, maintain and harvest field experiments, and analyze results. Other field activities include diagnostic surveys and farmer interviews. Lectures complement field activities. The objective of these courses is to provide trainees with the skills required to conduct on-farm and on-station research to solve production problems in maize (Zea maysL.) or wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) and generate appropriate recommendations for farmers.
