Corn Breeding: Types of Cultivars

Abstrakt: A cultivar is a plant variety that has been developed for a specific use, such as production of grain. The most common type of corn cultivar grown since the middle of the 20th century by U.S. farmers is the single-cross hybrid. Before this time, other types of cultivars predominated. In this lesson we describe the development and production of single-cross hybrids and other types of corn cultivars. The lesson begins with a brief description of genes and alleles, which is helpful in understanding some of the genetic differences among types of cultivars. This lesson is written at an introductory level, targeting people without prior training in genetics, breeding, or related sciences. Farmers who want to participate in breeding clubs, scientists who are not plant breeders but work collaboratively with them, or others who want an introduction to types of corn cultivars may benefit from this lesson.
