This paper discusses the materials issues that have to be resolved before polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) become commercial in automobiles. The main materials issues are (1) a membrane that can operate at higher temperatures and lower relative humidity, (2) improved onboard hydrogen storage, (3) a hydrogen fuel infrastructure and (4) lower cost electrocatalysts. The paper discusses in detail x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and related electrochemical studies of novel binary and ternary alloy electrocatalysts from 3M Company. |
