In this study, designing polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) with low Pt-loading is aimed in order to reduce Pt usage in PEFC and further spread this technology. With the use of a standard catalyst, TEC10E50E, and a common spray printing method, membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) were prepared with various cathode Pt-loading. Then, a correlation between cathode Pt-loading and MEA performance was evaluated. By analyzing each overvoltage factor, the correspondence of activation overvoltage to cathode Pt-loading was evaluated, and the minimum requirement of Pt-loading was determined to 0.15 mgPt/cm2 in this study. Moreover, a correlation between concentration overvoltage and the amount of carbon in the cathode was also found. Sufficient thickness of cathode layers was realized as a requirement to reduce concentration overvoltage. Finally, cathode layers were designed with low Pt-loading but with extra carbon to increase cathode thickness. |
