Abstrakt: The ionization of oxygen in alkaline solutions on a nickel substrate is examined, with special reference to the state of the nickel surface. If nickel is maintained at above ca−0·15 V vshydrogen in the same solution, oxygen begins to be adsorbed: above +0·1 V a phase oxide such as Ni(OH)2is probably formed. The ionization of oxygen slows down (at any one potential) with increasing oxidation of the electrode.
